Crime City is a free text-based mafia MMO played entirely in the browser. No download, no client, no wallet - an email address is the whole signup.

It differs from most games in this genre in one structural way: the game does not run forever. A season starts on the 1st of every month and ends on the 26th, at which point every character is wiped and everyone restarts at level 1. Progress within a season is real and permanent; progress between seasons is not.

Inside a season

• Commit crimes and robberies, train stats and take jobs to build a character
• Join or found a gang, and run gang crimes, robberies and sabotage against rivals
• Trade on a player-driven market, buy venues and businesses for passive income, and play the stock market
• Race cars, run casinos, hire detectives and place bounties
• Attack other players - and because death is permanent within a season, losing badly can end your run outright

Round-based play is not unique here - Omerta does a version of it. What is unusual is the combination: a hard seasonal wipe, in-season permadeath so a lead has to be defended rather than banked, and a payout to the top finishers at each close.

The result is that a new player is never more than a few weeks behind the leaders, and the leaderboard at a season's close is a genuine finishing order rather than a measure of who registered earliest.
